Student Immigration Visas
Overview:
The United States offers multiple options for foreign nationals seeking to enter into the United States to study. These student visas allow for foreign nationals to enter into academic, vocational, non-academic, and language programs. To participate, students must demonstrate that they are enrolled in an approved program, have the financial ability to support themselves without working, and do not intend to immigrate permanently to the United States, among other requirements.
Family and Work:
Students are able to bring their spouses and children into the United States to live with them. However, neither the student nor the spouse is allowed to seek employment in the United States (unless they obtain an additional, work authorized visa). One exception to the work ban placed on foreign national students is for optional practical training, which allows students to work for a fixed amount of time following the completion of their studies.
