Overview: The F-1 visa allows foreign nationals to enter into the United States to study in academic programs and/or the language-training programs.
Qualifications: Applicants for the F-1 Visa must demonstrate that they do not have an intent to immigrant, that they are enrolled in a full academic course load, and have the financial means to ensure that they will not need to engage in unauthorized employment.
Process: Students must first obtain a I-20 from the school at which they will enroll. Once an I-20 is received, the student will need to go to a U.S. Consulate and have a F-1 Visa issued. Once the visa is obtained, the student may enter the United States. Once in the United States, the student must maintain status by keeping a valid passport at all times, attending the authorized school, participating in a full course of study, not work unless authorized, and reporting changes in residence.
Ability to Work: In certain, limited circumstances, F-1 visa holders are able to work. Additionally, the visa allows students to participate in Optional Practical Training (OPT). OPT is meant to provide students with practical training and is allowed for up to twelve months of work that must be completed within 14 months of a student’s completion of the academic program (In limited situations, the twelve month can be extended). The employment must be in a related field to to field of study.
