The M-1 visa allows foreign nationals to enter into the United States to study in vocational and other non-academic programs.
Qualifications:
Applicants for the M-1 Visa must demonstrate that they do not have an intent to immigrant, that they are enrolled in a full course load, and have the financial means to ensure that they will not need to engage in unauthorized employment.
Process:
Students must first obtain a I-20 from the school at which they will enroll. Once an I-20 is received, the student will need to go to a U.S. Consulate and have a M-1 Visa issued. Once the visa is obtained, the student may enter the United States. Once in the United States, the student must maintain status by keeping a valid passport at all times, attending the authorized school, participating in a full course of study, not work unless authorized, and reporting changes in residence. Noncitizens in the United States can also change status to become a M-1 student.
