Recently, the NPR show, This American Life, broadcast a report from Alabama that discusses the fallout from that state’s passage of a restrictive immigration law. The report, entitled “Ripe What You Sow“, provides an in-depth review of what consequences have developed since the law’s enactment. Most disturbing to me was not what was actually written in the law, but the way the law’s passage changed the population’s attitude and demeanor. It sounds like the law -even if it is not legally discriminatory – has opened the floodgates to racial discrimination on a societal level. It has created a vigilante attitude.
