Back in June, the President announced that the government would grant deferred action to qualifying individuals who entered the United States before turning 16, and who were not in status on that date. Qualifying individuals will be able to gain work authorization and not face removal from the United States.
However, for most individuals the exact process for applying for deferred action is not known. Some details about the process are starting to emerge. At a news conference on Friday, the USCIS announced that:
- It would begin accepting applications on August 15th,
- That the cost of the application (plus work authorization) will be $465, and
- That the it has not yet finalized the required form for the application.
This means that no applications can be started yet, and that no applications can be started until the forms are released. There is no certainty that the forms will be released by August 15th… So possible applicants will need to continue to wait to apply.
