Senator Schumer recently told a crowd that he expects that comprehensive immigration reform will be completed by March 2011. It is assuring to know that Senator Schumer thinks that immigration reform will happen within the next two years. But March 2011 is a long ways off in the political world and it is difficult to know why immigration reform cannot be done now but will be completed by March 2011. Moreover, it was Senator Schumer who last spring said that comprehensive immigration reform would be done by Labor Day 2009. Why should we believe him now? Why cannot this pressing issue be addressed now? Is Congress unable to face more than one tough situation at a time?
