I hope Zalmay Khalilzad has been relaxing during the last month. The last six years have seen Ambassador Khalilzad serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan (2003-2005), the U.S. Ambassador to Iraq (2005-2007), and the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (2007-2009).
Although Ambassador Khalilzad has only recently become a household name, he has been serving in various government agencies since the 1980s. Ambassador Khalilzad was born in Afghanistan and first came to the United States as a high school exchange student. After being educated at the American University of Beirut and the University of Chicago, Ambassador Khalilzad became an Assistant Professor at Columbia University and began the service to his nation that would lead him to become the highest ranking Muslim in the Bush Administration.
In the coming years I am sure that Ambassador Khalilzad will continue to serve his nation, and I thank him for his service. I wonder, how many future Ambassador Khalilzads are students right now?
